The DAWN Fund

The DAWN Fund aims to alleviate some of the stressors faced by the trans, two-spirit and non-binary community and to increase supports, hope, and joy.

Domiciled at the COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF NOVA SCOTIA, the fund is overseen by a committee, working alongside Shelley Thompson, of six LGBTQ+2SP individuals: Julien Davis, Aimee MacDonald, Nolan Pike, Alex Hosein, Veronica Merryweather, Gabriel Enxuga.

Writer/Director/Actor ShelleyThompson created the DAWN Fund, after her film DAWN, HER DAD & THE TRACTOR won the 2022 Nova Scotia Masterworks Prize. The DAWN Fund was launched on March 31, 2023, the International Trans Day of Visibility, with a series of screenings of Thompson’s DAWN, HER DAD & THE TRACTOR: the story of a young trans woman returning home after the death of her mother to make peace with her estranged father. Dawn and her dad begin to restore the old family tractor, cautiously rebuilding their relationship as they come to understand the mechanics of the heart. The story evolved from Thompson’s experience of living in rural Nova Scotia, and being parent to a young trans man, singer-songwriter T. Thomason.
